Nile Boat cruise Murchison falls

A Nile boat cruise offers two completely different bucket-list experiences depending on where you choose to travel: scenic wildlife safari cruises in Uganda or multi-day historical temple cruises in Egypt.

Because options vary greatly by location, here is a complete breakdown of the best places, itineraries, and costs to help you plan your journey.

Murchison Falls (Bottom of the Falls): This iconic 3-hour round trip departs from Paraa Jetty and travels upstream to the base of the world’s most powerful waterfall. You will sail past heavy concentrations of hippos, massive Nile crocodiles, elephants, and water birds.

WHAT IS THE NILE BOAT CRUISE TO MURCHISON FALLS?

The Victoria Nile flows 7,000km from Lake Victoria to Egypt. At Murchison Falls, the entire river is forced through a 7m / 23ft wide gorge and drops 43m / 141ft with explosive force. The Cruise: A 50-seater or private boat leaves Paraa Jetty and goes upstream against the current for 3 hours.

You cruise past hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, elephants on banks, buffalo, waterbuck, and 300+ bird species. The Climax: The boat stops 200m from the base of the falls. You feel the spray, hear the roar, and see rainbows. You cannot go closer by boat due to rocks + force of water.Return: 3 hours downstream back to Paraa. Downstream is faster and you see different animals.

WILDLIFE YOU’LL SEE ON THE CRUISE

Murchison Falls NP has the highest concentration of hippos in Africa. The river is the wildlife highway.

1. Hippos – Guaranteed: 100+ hippos in pods of 20-40. You’ll be 10-15m away. They yawn, fight, and block the channel. Guides will not get closer than 50m for safety.
2. Nile Crocodiles – Guaranteed: Big males 4-5m long sunbathing on sandbanks. July-Oct = baby crocs visible. This is the best croc viewing in Uganda.
3. Elephants & Buffalo: Herds come to drink at the riverbanks, especially 2:00 PM cruise. Dry season = 90% chance.
4. Antelope & Others: Waterbuck, bushbuck, Uganda kob, warthog, monkeys in riverside forest.
5: Birds – 300+ Species: Must-see: African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, Egyptian Geese.

Rare: Shoebill Stork in the delta. Ask for “Delta trip” add-on $35 more.
